Fare evaders

by Liz
(Sydney Australia)

Hi,

I have been told that in Denmark there is a scheme for fare evaders - the fine for travelling without a ticket is equivalent to a yearly pass- and the fare evaders are made to purcahse this.

However reading your web site this does not look like the case. I imagine that such a scheme would have a few complications?

I would be most grateful to receive information about how fare evasion strategies work in denmark.

Do you actually follow any policy directives in regard to fare evasion?

Cheers Liz

If you are caught riding public transporation without a valid ticket, you are fined. It is not as expensive as a yearly pass, but it is expensive. Presently it is 750 kroner. If you are caught more than once, you may get higher fines, but do not know about that. Will see if I can find the information, but it is at least 750 kroner for a single infraction.

Fare Evaders Update
by: Charlie FYI Denmark

Due to a large number of complaints about the 750DKK fine for riding without a ticket, DSB has now instituted a new system.

If you are caught without a ticket and it is your first offence, you will be made to buy a ticket on the spot and fined 100DKK.

If you are caught a second time, than you will be paying the 750DKK fine.

During 2010, there were over 3.7 million trips taken without a ticket, which is well over 50 million kroner lost in revenue.
