Going to movie theaters in Denmark is a little bit different than in the US or UK and it is often a surprise to many foreigners who are first time movie goers in Denmark. When you buy a ticket in a Danish movie theaters, you will not only be buying a ticket, but also a reserved seat. If you do not ask for a specific seat, you will be given an assigned seat. It is always best to ask for a certain area, row or make your request known.
There is a seating chart at the counter where you are buying your ticket, so check where you will be sitting. It is sometimes possible to exchange your seats, but better to get it right from the start and avoid any hassels. It is not always possible to get the seat you want, but at least you will know where you are seated. Do you want to be on the end aisle, middle, near the top or near the bottom. It is possible to move to an empty seat when the movie starts, if no one else is sitting there. But beware, because a late comer could come in and ask you to move from "their" seat.
Second of all, there are usually large confectionary stores in the theaters. You can go in and buy all sorts of candy or "slik" as it is referred to in Denmark. There may not be a concession stand and you will have to go to the small store and get your drinks, popcorn and other edibles there. You can also buy beer or wine and bring that in with you. To many foreigners this is a shock. We can drink alcohol in most movie theaters.
Movie ticket prices range from 80 kroner to 110 kroner, depending on the theater, time and movie. You can even buy your tickets online from most theaters. There will be a small surcharge 5 to 15 kroner.
All theaters do show the movies in the original language with Danish subtitles. The exception to this is often animation movies or movies for children which are often dubbed. Check with theater before buying your ticket.
P.S. Danish films do not have English subtitles. They do not even have Danish subtitles, which would actually come in handy.
Below is a fairly comphrensive list of the movie theaters in Denmark. There are others, but this will give you a good start. You can also look up your location / city and add bio in the google search engine for a location near you. For example if you looking for movie theaters, go to google.dk and if you live in Viborg. You put in Viborg + bio.
Make your life in Denmark more enjoyable - go see a movie!
BEWARE Just because you see a sign that says BIO, does not always mean that it is one of the ordinary movie theaters. There are many places that have signs that say "BIO" or "CINEMA" and they do show regular movies, but they are adult movies. It is usually obvious because they are located near or in shops that sell adult wares. There are also usually "red lights" over the doors or windows. This is usually a big clue to the type of establishment. They are not dangerous places, but you are not likely to see the lastest blockbuster there! These places are usualy found in the larger cities like Copenhagen, Arhus and Aalborg.
